Resumo: Introduction: The vaccines work in the prevention, control, and eradication of preventable diseases. However, countless difficulties stand out for the compliance with the immunization schedule for children. Objective: To identify the reasons that lead to non-compliance with the basic vaccination calendar of children up to twenty four months old in a Basic Health Unit with the Family Health Strategy in a municipality in Southern Brazil. Methods: The present article is based on a quantitative-descriptive study. A pre-encoded survey form was used to collect important information about the served population. EpiData (3.01) software was used for the database and analysis. Results: It was found that male infants have a higher prevalence in relation to delayed immunization. As for the people responsible for the children, it was evidenced that most of them were women, and a considerable part is composed by adolescents of both sexes, being single the marital status most informed. The vaccine with the highest percentage of delay was the inactivated poliovirus, and the least delayed were MMR, MMRV, and rotavirus. As for the delayed immunization reasons, the main ones were determined by the absence of vaccines in the health service and forgetfulness on the part of those responsible for children. Conclusion: The results showed the importance of the Basic Health Unit in the development of strategies in order to cover the infant immunization schedule, with an emphasis on active search carried out by community health agents and also in the records of biopharmaceuticals for better management of inputs.
