Comparação da percepção da estética facial de pacientes com diferentes perfis

The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of the facial aesthetics of patients with different profiles, from the perspective of orthodontists, laypeople and patients. The sample consisted of 81 women and 39 men, with a mean age of 26.3 years, selected in private clinics at the beginning of the orthodontic treatment, and divided into three groups of 40 individuals according to facial profile convexity. The groups were formed by straight, concave and convex profiles, based on the value of the facial convexity angle (G.Sn.Pog') measured in the initial cephalometric tracings of the patients. Before the initial orthodontic documentation, the patients analyzed their own front facial photographs, with and without smile, and the facial profile and performed an evaluation of the likability of these images through a Likert scale composed of five options. A group of 30 orthodontists and 30 lay people also evaluated the same images following the same pleasing scale. The Friedman nonparametric test was used to compare the three groups of convexity on the faces' pleasantness. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the three groups of evaluators with the pleasantness scores. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to determine the correlation between the angle of convexity and the attributed goodness scores. A significance level of 5% was used for all tests. The results showed that the patients and laymen attributed higher marks of pleasantness than orthodontists, with statistical difference in all evaluations, except in the frontal analysis of the convex group. The correlation coefficients were negative, indicating that facial profiles with angles values greater than 120 obtained the lowest scores, but this correlation was only significant in the evaluation of orthodontists when analyzing the profile. Orthodontists, patients and laymen do not perceive differences in faces with large discrepancies when evaluated in the frontal view. The highest scores were attributed to patients with a straight profile.
