Resumo: | Evidence of the antimicrobial activity of innumerable natural products and the need for economically acceptable and potent drugs against microorganisms resistant to synthetic antibiotics are required. The use of herbal medicine is millenarian and the use of medicinal plants to treat diseases has been little explored. The plant Joannesia princeps (Euphorbiaceae) presents many biological activities, being its seeds used in popular medicine like purgative. The objective of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of hydrotheranic extracts of leaves, stem and seeds of J. princeps on different strains of microorganisms, as well as to develop laboratory methodologies used for the evaluation of antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial activity, the inhibition of biofilm formation by candidas and the cytotoxicity of extracts in cell culture were determined. The extract of the leaves of J. princeps presented antimicrobial activity for 12 of the 21 strains tested and was effective against three isolated yeasts. The extract of the stem of J. princeps presented antimicrobial activity only against M luteus (ATCC 10240), whereas the extract of the seeds showed absence of activity on the microorganisms tested. Extracts of J. princeps did not inhibit biofilm formation by any single Candida species. The tests showed toxicity of the extracts against BHK-21 cells. This study showed an important antimicrobial activity of leaf extracts of J. princeps even at a maximum concentration of 12.5 mg / mL, so it is worthwhile to consider other studies using higher concentrations. |

O uso da fitoterapia é milenar e a utilização de plantas medicinais para tratar doenças tem sido pouco explorada. A planta Joannesia princeps (Euphorbiaceae) apresenta muitas atividades biológicas, sendo suas sementes utilizadas na medicina popular como purgante. Este estudo teve como objetivo, pesquisar a atividade antimicrobiana em extratos hidroetanólicos das folhas, do caule e das sementes de J. princeps sobre diferentes linhagens de micro-organismos, como também desenvolver metodologias laboratoriais utilizadas para testes de avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana. Foi determinada a atividade antimicrobiana, a inibição da formação de biofilme por candidas e a citotoxicidade dos extratos em cultura celular. O extrato das folhas de J. princeps apresentou atividade antimicrobiana para 12 das 21 cepas testadas e se mostrou efetivo contra três leveduras isoladas. O extrato do caule de J. princeps apresentou atividade antimicrobiana apenas contra o M luteus (ATCC 10240), enquanto que o extrato das sementes apresentou ausência de atividade sobre os micro-organismos testados. Os extratos de J. princeps, não inibiram a formação de biofilme por nenhuma espécie de Candida isolada. Os testes mostraram toxicidade dos extratos contra células BHK-21.
