Resumo: In analyzing the tax lists of 1679-82, composed for the collection of the Donativo Real, this article examines the changing structures of rural society in the Sao Paulo region in the seventeenth century. The lists demonstrate how an economy based on Indian labor produced significant differences in wealth within the rural districts, which stands in contrast with the dominant idea in Paulista historigraphy, which denies the existence of class or wealth distinctions among the bandeirantes. Thus, the widespread presence of impoverished, subsistence cultivators, as observed in the eighteenth century, was the result of a historical process of marginalization.

As listas demonstram como uma economia assentada na exploração do trabalho indígena produziu desigualdades significativas na distribuição da riqueza entre os habitantes dos distritos rurais. Tal conclusão diverge das principais tendências da historiografia paulista, as quais negam a existência de distinções de classe ou de riqueza entre os "bandeirantes". Assim, a presença marcante de lavradores de subsistência empobrecidos, observada rotineiramente no meio rural paulista no século XVIII, foi antes de mais nada resultado de um processo histórico de marginalização. Universidade de São Paulo.
