Resumo: This study aimed to investigate interactions between families and shelter institutions, based on the bioecological theoretical model of human development by Urie Bronfenbrenner. The interaction between workers of an institution in the extreme South of Brazil and the family members of a sheltered child were followed during the process of family reinsertion. The professionals showed idealized beliefs and perceptions that prescribe the expectations and life style of traditional nuclear families. The family, in turn, feared the judgments of the institution representatives due to the possibility of losing the guard of their other non-institutionalized children. Therefore, the reports of the family and the institution revealed mistrust between the two contexts, which hinders and postpone the return of children to their original families.

El presente estudio tubo por objetivo investigar las interacciones entre las familias y las instituciones para menores partiendo del modelo bioecológico de desarrollo humano de Urie Bronfenbrenner. Por lo tanto, fueron investigadas las interacciones de funcionarios de una institución del extremo sur del Brasil y la familia de un niño institucionalizado durante el proceso de reinserción familiar. Los profesionales revelaron creencias y percepciones idealizadas que prescriben las expectativas de los modos de vida familiar nuclear tradicional. Al mismo tiempo, la familia presenta temores en relación a los juicios de los representantes de la institución, por la posibilidad de perder la guarda de los otros hijos no institucionalizados. Por lo tanto los discursos de la familia y de la institución revelaron interacciones que evidencian desconfianza entre los dos contextos, lo que dificulta y prorroga el retorno de los niños al ambiente familiar. O presente estudo teve por objetivo investigar as interações entre famílias e as instituições de abrigo a partir do modelo bioecológico de desenvolvimento humano de Urie Bronfenbrenner. Para tanto, foram acompanhadas as interações de funcionários de uma instituição do extremo sul do Brasil e a família de uma criança institucionalizada durante o processo de reinserção familiar. Os profissionais revelaram crenças e percepções idealizadas que prescrevem as expectativas dos modos de vida da família nuclear tradicional. Por sua vez, a família apresentou temores em relação aos julgamentos dos representantes da instituição pela possibilidade de perder a guarda dos outros filhos não-institucionalizados. Portanto, os discursos da família e da instituição revelaram interações que evidenciam desconfiança entre os dois contextos, o que dificulta e prorroga o retorno das crianças ao ambiente familiar.
