Sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of hearing complaints

Resumo: This study assessed the sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of hearing complaints in outpatients attending an university ear, nose and throat clinic. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Canoas, Southern Brazil, from 1999 to 2002. Seven-hundred and ninety-five subjects who underwent the audiometric test were analyzed. The results showed that the complaint of hearing loss presented 80.9% sensitivity, 69.6% specificity and 86.5% positive predictive value and 60.4% negative predictive value. Despite its subjective character, the audiometric test can be considered a reliable diagnostic tool and should be used due to its low cost compared to the new technologies.

Objetivou-se verificar o valor preditivo, sensibilidade e especificidade das queixas auditivas de pacientes avaliados em clínica de fonoaudiologia de uma universidade. O estudo, de delineamento transversal, foi realizado em Canoas, RS, de 1998 a 2002. Foram analisados 795 indivíduos que realizaram o exame audiométrico. Os resultados mostraram que a queixa de perda auditiva apresentou sensibilidade de 80,9%, especificidade de 69,6%, valor preditivo positivo de 86,5% e negativo de 60,4%. O exame audiométrico é um exame confiável, apesar da sua subjetividade, devendo ser utilizado devido ao seu baixo custo em relação às novas tecnologias. Universidade de São Paulo.
