Resumo: In this paper we discuss how the theme of the sea and the trip is developed in A jangada de pedra (1986) by José Saramago and Réquiem para o navegador solitário (2006) by Luís Cardoso. The sea is a fundamental element to the lusophone culture and represents what separates and unites people. Therefore, by analyzing the work of a Portuguese and a Timorese writer, we show how the fiction reveals the formation of the multifaceted identity of speaking countries of Portuguese language and also its proposal of future development, which is sometimes developed in dreams and utopia.
