Resumo: This essay analyses Camus’ tale La pierre qui pousse, “The Stone that Sprouts”, included in his book L’exil et le royaume. The episode takes place in Iguape during the feast dedicated to Bom Jesus (Good Jesus), the town’s patron saint. A French engineer, d’Arrast, having arrived in Iguape, meets a poor Negro who has promised to bear an enormous stone with him in order to thank for a miracle accomplished by Bom Jesus. The tale is a touching example of literature of resistance: it was written soon after Camus’ travel to Brazil.
