Impact assessment of an occupational therapy intervention with emphasis on occupational performance of children and adolescents with visual impairment

Resumo: | Vision is the main route of perception of environmental stimuli and its impaired leads to lowering of the individual’s occupational performance. In this context, the occupational therapist can act as a facilitator of competent occupational performance. This study consisted of a quantitative approach, exploratory descriptive and aimed at describing the results of occupational therapy intervention in the occupational performance of children and adolescents with visual impairment in major demands identifi ed. For data collection was applied Canadian Occupational Performance Measure before and after the intervention. The sample consisted of 13 individuals, including children and adolescents 8-13 years old, of both sexes, diagnosedwith blindness or low vision. Interventions were conducted weekly in the period from March to December 2011. The main demands for intervention identifi ed by the clients were: use of knife and fork; snack preparation; recognition and choice of clothes; and dress up. Obtained an average change in performance and satisfaction of 3.66 and 3.87. The occupational therapy intervention, through customer-centric approach and techniques used, was effective inpromoting occupational performance of children and adolescents with visual impairment. |

Neste contexto, o terapeuta ocupacional pode agir como facilitador do desempenho ocupacional competente. Este estudo constituiu-se de abordagem quantitativa, de caráter exploratório descritivo, e teve como objetivo descrever os resultados da intervenção terapêutica ocupacional no desempenho ocupacional de crianças e adolescentes com defi ciência visual. Para coleta de dados aplicou-se a Medida Canadense de Desempenho Ocupacional antes e após a intervenção. A amostra constituiu-se de 13 indivíduos, entre crianças e adolescentes de 8 a 13 anos de idade, de ambos os sexos, com diagnóstico de cegueira ou baixa visão. Foram realizadas intervenções semanais, no período de março a dezembro de 2011. As principais demandas para a intervenção identifi cadas pelos clientes foram: utilização de garfo e faca; preparo do lanche; reconhecimento e escolha da roupa; e vestir-se. Obteve-se uma média de mudança nos de desempenho e satisfação de 3,66 e 3,87. A intervenção da terapia ocupacional, por meio da abordagem centrada no cliente e das técnicas utilizadas, mostrou-se efi caz na promoção do desempenho ocupacional das crianças e adolescentes com defi ciência visual.Universidade de São Paulo.
