Professional training in Campinas for people with disability: fragilities and perspectives

The purpose of the present study is to know the opportunities for professional training offered to people with disability by governmental and non-governmental institutions in the city of Campinas. The lack of information about programs and projects oriented to the professional development and instruction of this population was the motivation of this study. The methodological design involved theoretical study about themes related to labor, people with disability and national legislation. It also involved an exploratory research in order to identify and assess proposals devised by specific institutions for people with disability, and those who deal with them. Data were collected by institutional assessment, telephonic contacts, visits and interviews. Thirteen institutions were identified, two of them developing professional training projects specific for people with disability, and eleven that included those users. Their access to services is restricted, compared to their needs in terms of jobs, earnings and social life. The programs in the studied institutions present little variety of professional activities, frail communication systems, and they are generally located in the least vulnerable and populated regions of the city.
