Experiences with reinforced concrete in portuguese africa: the Brazilian influence

Resumo: There is a similarity between modern brazilian culture and Portugal that is identifiable in regards to the influences of the former on portuguese architectural output. Generally speaking, the relationship began with Brazil builds - Architecture new and old 1652-1942, a book the portuguese became acquainted with from the 1940s onwards. This relationship progressed until the inauguration of the new Brazilian capital of Brasilia, which marked the beginning of a decline in portuguese interest in the architecture of Brazil. The sculptural qualities of brazilian architecture - a result of the experimentation and use of the potentials of reinforced concrete - can be identified in some examples built in Portugal in the 1950s. The decisive influence of Oscar Niemeyer is the most documented. A similar phenomenon in terms of brazilian influences extended to the former colonies in Africa, which remained under portuguese control until 1975. Here, however, the interest in brazilian output persisted longer than it did in Portugal. Both Angola and Mozambique experienced something of a construction boom during the 1950s and 1960s, extending into the 1970s, where the use of reinforced concrete gradually established itself as the dominant practice. In some cases, the use of this material produced some highly original sculptural creations. The practice of architecture in the former portuguese colonies in Africa benefited from a certain degree of conceptual freedom and, in general terms, the quality of workmanship was no different from that in Portugal itself. In the aforementioned context, the current author will present three architects with a relevant body of work in Angola and Mozambique who built in concrete and, at the same time, had or showed affinities with the brazilian architecture of the same period. In Angola, this article highlights the career of Francisco Castro Rodrigues, who lived in Lobito from 1953 to 1987, and Fernão Lopes Simões de Carvalho, who lived in Luanda from 1960 to 1967. In Lourenço Marques (present Maputo), Mozambique, this article looks at the work of Amâncio d'Alpoim Miranda Guedes, who was known as Pancho Guedes and worked in the city from 1951 to the year of independence from Portugal, when he moved to South Africa. Given that this is an area in which little research has been conducted, this first approach is based primarily on accounts by the three architects. The first two are currently living in Portugal and the last resides in Lisbon and South Africa.

Un fenómeno semejante se extendió a los antiguos territorios coloniales africanos, sobre los que Portugal mantuvo la soberanía hasta 1975. Aquí, sin embargo, el interés en la producción brasileña há persistido por más tiempo si comparamos con la metrópoli. Tanto en Angola como en Mozambique, se ha visto una fuerte actividad constructiva durante las décadas de 1950 y 1960, que se ha extendido hasta el inicio de los años setenta, en la que el recurso al hormigón armado se ha intensificado como práctica dominante. En algunos casos su uso se tradujo en exploraciones plásticas originales. El ejercicio de la arquitectura en los antiguos territorios del África portuguesa gozaba de alguna libertad conceptual y, en general, la calidad del obrero no se diferenciaba del que trabajaba en el Portugal Ibérico. En el marco descrito serán aquí presentados tres casos de arquitectos con obra relevante en Angola y Mozambique, que han construido en hormigón y, simultáneamente, tuvieron o manifestaron afinidades con la arquitectura brasileña del mismo período. En Angola, se recuerda el recorrido de Francisco Castro Rodrigues, en Lobito entre 1953 y 1987, y de Fernão Lopes Simões de Carvalho, que ha permanecido en Luanda de 1960 a 1967. En Lourenço Marques (actual Maputo), se encontraba Amâncio d'Alpoim Miranda Guedes, conocido como Pancho Guedes, que mantuvo una actividad profesional entre 1951 y la fecha de independencia de la antigua colonia portuguesa, y se estableció en seguida en Sudáfrica. Por tratarse de un área de investigación todavía poco profundizada, este primer acercamiento se apoya de preferencia en los testimonios de estos tres arquitectos, que viven actualmente, los primeros en Portugal y el último entre Lisboa y Sudáfrica.Existe uma proximidade entre a cultura moderna brasileira e Portugal, que pode ser identificada pelas influências sentidas na produção arquitectónica portuguesa. Genericamente, estas relações iniciaram-se com Brazil builds - Architecture new and old 1652-1942, que os portugueses conhecem desde meados da década de 1940, progredindo até à inauguração de Brasília que marca o declínio do interesse português na arquitectura do Brasil. As qualidades plásticas da arquitectura brasileira - consequência do uso e exploração das potencialidades do concreto armado - podem ser detectadas em alguns exemplos construídos em Portugal durante os anos cinquenta. A influência determinante de Oscar Niemeyer é a mais documentada. Um fenómeno semelhante estendeu-se aos antigos territórios coloniais africanos, onde Portugal manteve soberania até 1975. Aqui, todavia, o interesse na produção brasileira persistiu mais tempo se comparado com a metrópole. Tanto em Angola como em Moçambique assistiu-se a uma forte actividade construtiva durante as décadas de 1950-1960, prolongando-se até ao inicio dos anos setenta onde o recurso ao concreto armado se intensificou como prática dominante. Em alguns casos o seu uso traduziu-se em explorações plásticas originais. O exercício da arquitectura nos antigos territórios da África portuguesa beneficiava de alguma liberdade conceptual e, na generalidade, a qualidade do operariado não se diferenciava daquele que trabalhava no Portugal Ibérico. Dentro do contexto descrito serão aqui apresentados três casos de arquitectos com obra relevante em Angola e Moçambique, que construíram em concreto e, simultaneamente, tiveram ou manifestaram afinidades com a arquitectura brasileira do mesmo período. Em Angola, recorda-se o percurso de Francisco Castro Rodrigues, no Lobito entre 1953 e 1987, e de Fernão Lopes Simões de Carvalho, que permaneceu em Luanda de 1960 a 1967. Em Lourenço Marques (actual Maputo), encontrava-se Amâncio d'Alpoim Miranda Guedes, conhecido por Pancho Guedes, que manteve uma actividade profissional entre 1951 e a data da independência da antiga colónia portuguesa, fixando-se em seguida na África do Sul. Tratando-se de uma área de investigação ainda pouco aprofundada, esta primeira aproximação apoia-se preferencialmente nos testemunhos destes três arquitectos, os primeiros, actualmente a viverem em Portugal e o último entre Lisboa e a África do Sul.Universidade de São Paulo.
