The presence of Catalan in digital platforms: the case of Twitch and TikTok

Resumo: Despite the relevance of Internet and social media among the youngest population, there have been few studies that focus on the use of Catalan in these contexts. In this paper, we carry out a qualitative analysis of the current situation of the Catalan language on TikTok and Twitch, two platforms that have grown significantly in the past few years. Twitch offers the chance to create specialized content, while on TikTok the use of an array of hashtags, but #estiktokat in particular, ensures the indexicality of the videos. These results show that content creators that use Catalan as their language participate actively in these platforms and have developed strategies in order to ensure that content in Catalan is created and that is accessible to other users.

En este artículo, llevamos a cabo un análisis cualitativo de la situación del catalán en TikTok y Twitch, dos plataformas que han crecido de forma significativa en los últimos años. Twitch ofrece la posibilidad de crear contenidos de ámbitos específicos en catalán, mientras que en TikTok el uso de varios hashtags, pero especialmente #estiktokat, aseguran la indexicalidad de los vídeos. Estos resultados demuestran que los creadores de contenidos en catalán participan activamente en estas plataformas y que han desarrollado estrategias para asegurar que se crea contenido en catalán y que es accesible para otros usuarios.Universidade de São Paulo.
