Resumo: The journal MATRIZes hereby launches this special issue dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Paulo Freire (1921-1998). The following set of texts, bringing together articles and testimonials from authors from various countries, attests to the strength and relevance of the theoretical-practical contribution of this citizen of the world born in Pernambuco, in North-eastern Brazil. These analyses intend to explore the contributions of Freire’s thought to the fields of communication, education and to civil society development, taking into consideration the local realities from which they emerged.
