Resumo: Este artigo procura refletir sobre as conexões, nem tão dicotômicas assim, entre os discursos legitimados socialmente como realidade e os discursos amparados na noção de espetáculo e de entretenimento, enfocando para tanto no universo dos travelogues – os filmes de viagem – muito populares entre os anos 1910 e 30, em especial no contexto norte-americano. Por um lado, os travelogues ajudaram a moldar a narrativa documentária, reafirmando certo lugar de legitimidade educativo/científico; por outro, mobilizavam um desejo de espetáculo e um fascínio para com as tecnologias de reprodutibilidade que já exercia no imaginário popular um lugar privilegiado como forma ambígua de entretenimento e conhecimento, desde o final do século XIX.

On one side, the travelogues helped to shape the documentary narrative, reafrming a certain scientifc/educational legitimacy; on another hand, they mobi- lized a desire for spectacle and fascination with media reproduction technology that already had a privileged place in the popular imagination as an ambiguous form of entertainment and knowledge since the end of the 19th century.
