Physiological effects of hidrotherapic session in children with Duchenne muscular distrophy

Summary: The Duchenne Muscular Distrophy (DMD) is a recessive genetic disturb, with a high mutation rate of a gene localized in the short side of X cromossome. It is characterized by an irreversible and progressive damage, mainly in the skeletal muscles. We believe that physical activities that requires maximum power against gravity, in a repetitive way, as bad as inactivity, can prejudice children with DMD. Warm water can improve moviments by flutuation effect and pain relief by warmness; it also provides a good environment for kids activities. In this article, we studied some physiologic responses of immersion and hydrotherapic sessions executed in 20 DMD children. It was possible to find some significant alterations in inspiratory and expiratory maximum pressures, and discrete alterations in cardiac frequency, oral temperature and level of oxigen saturation, as expected. So, we have demonstrated that hydrotherapy associated with physical activities is not a physical overload in children with DMD.

Caracteriza-se por um distúrbio progressivo e irreversível, principalmente da musculatura esquelética. Acredita-se que atividades físicas que requerem força muscular máxima contra a ação da gravidade, de forma repetitiva, assim como a inatividade podem prejudicar crianças portadoras de DMD. Uma opção razoável seria a realização de atividade física moderada em meio aquático. A água aquecida promove facilitação dos movimentos pelo efeito do empuxo e alívio de dores pelo calor, além de fornecer um ambiente favorável para atividades infantis. Neste trabalho, estudamos algumas respostas fisiológicas decorrentes da imersão e realização de sessão de hidroterapia em 20 crianças portadoras de DMD. Foi possível observar alterações significativas em relação às pressões inspiratória e expiratória máximas, e discretas alterações nos valores de freqüência cardíaca, temperatura oral e níveis de saturação de oxigênio, como esperado. Mostramos assim que a hidroterapia associada à atividade física de baixa a moderada intensidade não é uma sobrecarga física para crianças portadoras de DMD.Universidade de São Paulo.
