The role of model building in experiential learning: a study with professional and technological education students

Resumo: This study examines the learning process experienced by students at a teaching institution within the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific, and Technological Education during their participation on construction of models for a Science and Technology fair. Drawing upon David Kolb's theory of experiential learning, the research aimed to understand how students' engagement in this modeling activity could facilitate the construction of more meaningful, systemic, and holistic knowledge. To achieve this objective, we analyzed the records produced by the participants during the process of building the models. The results revealed that students' learning encompassed both the appropriation and transformation of experiences, with a greater inclination toward abstract appropriation and active transformation. These findings indicate that activities based on model building can be a promising approach for Vocational and Technological Education, as they engage students in constructing knowledge that is more meaningful, systemic, and comprehensive, in line with the national curriculum guidelines for Professional and Technological Education.

Sob a perspectiva da teoria da aprendizagem experiencial de David Kolb, a pesquisa objetivou compreender como o engajamento dos estudantes nessa atividade de modelagem pode promover a construção de conhecimentos mais significativos, sistêmicos e integrais. Para alcançar esse objetivo, foram analisados os registros produzidos pelos participantes durante o processo de construção dos modelos. Os resultados revelaram que a aprendizagem dos estudantes foi equilibrada entre os modos de apropriação e transformação das experiências, com uma tendência maior para a apropriação abstrata e transformação ativa. Esses achados indicam que as atividades baseadas na construção de modelos podem ser uma abordagem promissora para a Educação Profissional e Tecnológica.
