Engineering education and technological innovation: how to stimulate the ability to innovate?

Resumo: Technological innovation is a topic that occupies a prominent position in today's world. However, it is rarely discussed by engineering students. A study was conducted by means of research in the Capes journals portal, whose papers were selected by combining the following search terms in English and Portuguese "entrepreneurship (empreendedorismo)," "innovation (inovação)", "education (educação)"; "Engineering (engenharia)" aiming to retrieve national and international research papers. This study aimed to address the technological innovation in the educational perspective and answer the following question: how to stimulate the capacity for innovation in engineering education? The results indicate that the solution is not simple, both to break away from the traditional methodology and creating teaching strategies approaching the classroom of the business world's reality. Papers that deal with the use of technologies as innovative tools in the process of teaching and learning, as well as discussions on innovations in products and services unrelated to engineering education were excluded. The present study points out some strategies: knowledge of the reality of innovative companies by the academic world, stimulating work in multidisciplinary teams, professional development with emphasis on the future, and critical and amplified vision of the social dynamics. Accordingly, the STS (Science, Technology and Society) field of study can offer important contributions. It provides elements for analytical thinking of the technological innovation process, with a look to improve issues of quality of life, without focusing exclusively on the production costs reduction.

Um estudo foi realizado por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica utilizando as bases de dados Web of Science e Scopus. Na pesquisa as palavras chave “empreendedorismo”, “inovação”, “ensino” e “engenharia” foram cruzadas para responder a seguinte questão: como promover a capacidade de inovar? Os resultados indicam que a solução não é simples, tanto para romper com a metodologia tradicional como criar estratégias de ensino que aproximem a sala de aula da realidade do mundo dos negócios. Este artigo aponta algumas estratégias: o conhecimento da realidade das empresas inovadoras pelo mundo acadêmico, estímulo ao trabalho em equipes multidisciplinares, valorização profissional com ênfase no futuro, visão crítica e ampliada da dinâmica social.
