Resumo: | OBJECTIVE: To identify whether there is a relationship between sports practice and psychological satisfaction in physical education classes (SATPE) with self-perceived behavioral and physical health indicators in a structural equation model (SEM).METHODS: Cross-sectional study, carried out with 230 boys and 240 girls (n=470) between 11 and 17 years old, in a city in southern Brazil. The sports practice, SATPE, behavioral health indicators: sleep time, sedentary lifestyle, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), days/week of physical activity (DPA), time of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in one day were measured by questionnaires. The physical health indicator: body mass index (BMI) was evaluated according to the PROESP-BR. The theoretical/statistical support of the structural equation model was evaluated according to fit parameters and relationship forces.RESULTS: The SEM indicates a positive association between sports practice and SATPE. Sleep, DPA, moderate and vigorous physical activity are negatively related to sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary lifestyle correlates with lower HRQOL. HRQOL is positively associated with the sports practice and personal factors (male gender; lower BMI and age values). SATPE is indirectly related to HRQOL, sleep, physical activity, and lower sedentary lifestyle.CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that sports practice and SATEFI are positively and preponderantly associated with sleep time, DPA, moderate and vigorous physical activity, lower BMI and shorter sedentary lifestyle time. These health-beneficial relationships were stronger in younger adolescents, and males compared to females. |
