Resumo: OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the swallowing quality of life (QoL) of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radio/chemotherapeutic treatment undergoing laser Photobiomodulation for oral mucositis.METHODS: The study included 28 patients affected by HNC undergoing cancer treatment through radiotherapy alone or combined with chemotherapy. The individuals were randomly allocated into two groups, Laser On (LO) (n=19) and Laser Sham (LS) (n=9), the latter being the control group. Swallowing quality of life (SQL) was assessed using the MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI). The analyzes took place in the 1st, 12th and 24th radiotherapy sessions. Student t test were used for comparison between groups and ANOVA and Bonferroni post-test for measurements over time.RESULTS: Only the physical domain showed a statistically significant difference in the LO group over time (p=0.03) and between the 1st and 12th radiotherapy sessions in the LS group (p=0.01).CONCLUSIONS: Although with limitations, the study showed that there was a worsening of SQL in all patients, especially in the physical domain, throughout the periods studied.
