Resumo: This is a comparative study between Shakespeare´s The Tempest and Paule Marshall´s Brazil, which explores their intertextual relationship though a postcolonial reading of both texts.  Analysis showA how Caliban suffers the colonization process, in distinct manners,  in each of these texts. Relationships of power and conquet, and the discrimination against those who are subjected by the imperial power are studied in relation to Shakespeare´s text; analysis of Marshall´s short story highlights the identitary conflict arising from colonization of the mind, and takes personal identity as  emblematic of  national identitiy. Marshall´s Caliban is, thus, interpreted as expressing the drama suffered by colonized nations which, having been alientated from their traditional  values, feel disoriented and confused regarding their cultural identity.

Unioeste2011-05-26info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://e-revista.unioeste.br/index.php/travessias/article/view/4334Travessias; Vol. 5 No. 1 (2011)Travessias; Vol. 5 Núm. 1 (2011)Travessias; v. 5 n. 1 (2011)1982-5935reponame:Travessias (Cascavel.
