Resumo:   The intention of this study is contributing to the work with texts in mother and foreign languages in higher education. In this work, we aim at establishing a relation between social function of discursive genre and underlying objectives in professors’ proposals to reading and text production teaching in Letters Course. In doing this, we make use of collected data by means of questionnaires applied to professors and graduating students from 7th period of Letters Course at Rio Grande do Norte State University’s Pau dos Ferros Campus. We theoretically support on studies by Bakhtin (2003), Marcuschi and on discussions proposed by Souza (2006, 2007a, 2007b). The collected data revealed that, despite of making use of variety of discursive genre, particularly those of academic sphere, have already arrived at classroom in higher education, its applicability presents some problems especially in relation to lack of corrections in some proposals of reading and production of texts, such as: selected discursive genres, social function of these genres, objectives and proposed activities. All of these problems make obvious the necessity of wide-ranging study and focalization in discussions concerning methodologies and teaching practices of reading and production of texts in higher education.

All of these problems make obvious the necessity of wide-ranging study and focalization in discussions concerning methodologies and teaching practices of reading and production of texts in higher education.   No intuito de contribuir com as discussões para o trabalho com textos nas aulas de língua materna e de língua estrangeira no Ensino Superior, objetivamos, neste trabalho, estabelecer uma relação entre a função social dos gêneros do discurso e os objetivos subjacentes às propostas dos professores para o ensino da leitura e da produção de textos em Curso de Letras. Para tanto, utilizamos os dados coletados por meio de questionários aplicados a professores e alunos do 7º período do Curso de Letras/CAMEAM/UERN. Fundamentamo-nos teoricamente nos estudos de Bakhtin (2002, 2003), Marcuschi (2008) e nas discussões propostas por Souza (2006, 2007a, 2007b). Os dados revelam que, apesar de o trabalho com a variedade de gêneros discursivos, especialmente dos textos do discurso acadêmico, já ter chegado às salas de aula do Ensino Superior, a sua aplicabilidade apresenta, ainda, alguns problemas, especialmente na falta de correlação que há, em algumas propostas de leitura e produção de textos, entre os gêneros discursivos selecionados, a função social desses gêneros, os objetivos e as atividades propostas. Esses dados apontam, ainda, para a necessidade de maior estudo e focalização nas discussões sobre as metodologias e as práticas de ensino de leitura e produção de textos no Ensino Superior.
