Resumo: This article discusses the image of the Brazilian culture in France, in themiddle of nineteen century and the beginning of the twenty, and the role of the diplomats,Brazilian and French travelers and writers that had contributed, favorably or not, for ourrepresentation abroad. It were much attempts of the Brazilians to create a positive image ofthe nation that, in the end of nineteen century, was seen as a retrograde and depravedcountry for the mestizo. The text gives emphasis to the duality that always was present inthe formation of the national character: the search of the identity and the bond with theFrench model of civilization and culture.

Foram muitas as tentativas dos brasileiros para criarem uma imagem positiva danação que, no final do século XIX, era visto como um país retrógrado e degenerado pelamestiçagem.
