Life projects of single young adults: A reflexion about the position of marriage

Resumo: Life projects are understood as the objectives adolescents establish for their lives and seek to accomplish in adulthood. This study has the purpose of knowing, based on 21 goals, the main life projects of young single adults and also to identify the position of marriage among these goals. The sample consisted of 197 participants: 77 men and 120 women, between 20 and 31 years old, coming from two different socialcultural contexts in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil): the cities of Porto Alegre (capital state) and Erechim (mid-sized city in the countryside). The life projects pointed out as top of the list were: professional achievement, personal achievement, good living conditions, fulfill one’s dreams and continue studying. Marriage came in the 19th place. No statistically significant differences (p ? 0.05) were found for either gender or sociocultural context. Data indicate that marriage, although it continues to be desired, is not among the main single young adults life projects but it remains considered as an event that is part of the life cycle. Esse trabalho teve como propósito conhecer, a partir de 21 metas, os principais projetos vitais de adultos jovens solteiros e identificar onde fica a posição do casamento entre esses projetos. A amostra foi constituída por 197 participantes, 77 homens e 120 mulheres, de 20 a 31 anos, integrantes de dois contextos socioculturais do Rio Grande do Sul: Porto Alegre e Erechim. Os projetos vitais apontados nas primeiras posições foram: realização profissional, realização pessoal, ter boas condições de vida, realizar os sonhos e continuar estudando. O casamento ficou na décima nona posição. Não foram encontradas diferenças estatísticas significativas (p ? 0,05) entre os sexos e nem entre os contextos capital e interior. Tais dados indicam que o casamento, embora continue desejado, não está entre os principais projetos vitais de adultos jovens solteiros, mas permanece sendo considerado como um evento que faz parte do ciclo vital.
