Resumo: This article gathers some research results about the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP), Brazil, and the Metropolitan Region of Santiago de Chile (RMS), Chile. The case studies were carried out during a PhD research analyzing the Brazilian and Chilean reality. It gathers geographical and historical analysis of each region. The article exposes some particularities of both realities considering not only the urban areas, but also the open spaces areas that still relates with countryside daily life. The results present information about the urban growth, highlighting the periods of high urban expansion. Moreover, it deals with the question, if a lack of urban planning is promoting inequality of social classes.
