Resumo: | Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill, popularly known as yerba mate, is a plant of the aquifolia family, included within the genus Ilex, which includes approximately 600 different species. It is a naturally occurring plant in southern Brazil, in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. It is commonly used by local people in a traditional drink known as chimarrão, in its hot or tererê form, in its cold form, being considered a drink that has several health benefits. In several studies it was possible to verify that this plant has promising antimicrobial activities, against several pathogenic microorganisms and alsoantioxidants, being tested against the degradation of food and free radicals. Given these hypotheses, this study aimed to analyze through a literature review, the works published in the last ten years relatedto the central question, defined as: whether there is documented antimicrobial and antioxidant activity for the species Ilex paraguariensis St.Hill published in the analyzed period. It was possible to show, through this review, that the plant Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill. it has antimicrobial and antioxidant activities documented in the literature, and it presents itself as a promising alternative, requiring more studies in order to analyze its use by the industry. |
