Resumo: This research has as general objective demonstrate the advantages that can be generated by an airport with a circular landing and takeoff runway on the reduction of the environment impact, using the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Center (NLR) Endless Runway project. From the deadlock between the great benefits brought to the society by the airports, and the great environment impact brought by the construction of an airport infrastructure, an innovative proposal is presented by Dutch researchers: an airport with a circular runway. The research was based on the theme’s bibliographic material, including current environmental legislation, and data from the Dutch project Endless Runway, made available by the researchers on the Internet. Once the environmental impacts caused by conventional airports were identified, the Endless Runway project was presented, and a comparison was made between the environmental impact caused by the conventional airport model, and the circular airport model, which is still fictitious, if applied to the real world. Then, possible limitations and challenges for a project of an airport with a circular runway were presented, such as the type of approach to be used for landing, emergency situations on the landing gear or aircraft controls, and regulation, certification and standardization. Through the research, the possibility of about 64% reduction on the degradation of flora and fauna and of about 10% reduction on the sound pressure levels on the regions close to the airports was presented. As for the microclimate change and reduction of the air quality, an improvement would be possible due to the reduction of the total devastated area, in addition to the reduction in fuel consumption on the ground by at least 5%. At the end of the research, the conclusion is that the Endless Runway project, although has limitations and points to be studied from the operational point of view, presents itself as a promising solution from the environmental point of view. The application of a project of an airport with a circular landing and take-off runway, at the same time could reduce the environmental impact caused by the airport infrastructure, could also allow an operational optimization at the airport, since a circular runway has an “endless extension”.

Diante do impasse do grande benefício que os aeroportos geram à sociedade, e o grande impacto ambiental que a construção da infraestrutura aeroportuária causa, é apresentada uma proposta inovadora de pesquisadores holandeses: um aeroporto com uma pista circular. A pesquisa foi fundamentada com bibliografia do tema, incluindo a legislação ambiental vigente, e dados do projeto holandês Pista Infinita, disponibilizado pelos pesquisadores na Internet. Identificados os impactos ambientais causados pelos aeroportos convencionais, foi feita a apresentação do projeto Pista Infinita, e realizada uma comparação entre o impacto ambiental do modelo de aeroporto convencional, e do modelo de aeroporto de formato circular, ainda fictício, se aplicado ao mundo real. Em seguida, possíveis limitações e desafios para um projeto de aeroporto com pista circular foram apresentados, como o tipo de aproximação a ser utilizada para o pouso, situações de emergência no trem de pouso ou nos comandos da aeronave, e a regulamentação, certificação e padronização. Através da pesquisa, foi apresentada a possibilidade de redução em cerca de 64% na degradação da flora e em cerca de 10% nos níveis de pressão sonora nas regiões próximas aos aeroportos. Quanto à alteração microclimática e redução da qualidade do ar, uma melhoria seria possível devido à redução da área total devastada, além da redução no consumo de combustíveis em solo em pelo menos 5%. Ao fim da pesquisa, conclui-se que o projeto Pista Infinita, embora possua algumas limitações e pontos a serem estudados do ponto de vista operacional, se apresenta como solução promissora do ponto de vista ambiental.
