Resumo: Introduction: Obesity in dogs is growing around the world as well as in human beings. Animals can develop various physical and metabolic disorders such as dyslipidemia characterized by hypercholesterolemia and/or hypertriglyceridemia which predispose to diseases, e.g., skin xanthomas, retinal lipemia and pancreatitis. Objective was to develop na herbal formulation with artichoke extract (C. scolymus) and Yacon (S. sonchifolius) and evaluate the lipemic activity in obese dogs. Methods: We created two forms of biscuit, one containing assets with Yacon and artichoke and another one without the assets. The physical chemical properties of the biscuits were analyzed for of weight, pH, humidity, thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography for both time zero and after 6 months” time. Obese Labrador retrievers with 5-12 years old were submitted randomly into two diferente groups. Control group, which received normal diet, i.e., food and biscuits without the assets and the Treated group which received normal diet food plus the biscuits containing assets with artichoke extract and Yacon for 8 weeks. The diagnosis of obesity in animals was assessed by body weight, body condition score and canine body mass index. The animals were subjected to blood sampling on the first day and every 15 days until the 8th week. The assays included the complete blood count, renal and liver function, oxidative stress and lipaemic analysis. Results: The biscuits showed no significant change in weight, pH and chlorogenic acid content, therefore the humidity was reduced significantly. Biochemical analysis of blood count, renal function, liver function, oxidative stress showed no significant changes for both groups. Furthermore, lipid analysis showed statistical difference with a significant reduction of HDL cholesterol for the Treated group. Additionally, analyses of total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides revealed no significant differences between groups. Conclusion: the biscuits remained stable for 6 months and did not cause any no toxicity to the animals. The management of the biscuits containing the assets artichoke extract and Yacon caused a significant reduction of HDL cholesterol in the Treated group. The main mechanisms for lowering HDL cholesterol could be attributed to luteolin and chlorogenic acid contained in artichoke as well as inulin and fructooligosaccharides fructans present in Yacon.
