Nowadays, in Brazil, the dog population has been growing and their life expectancy is rising as a result of the care given by their owners, who are more and more conscious, and seek to properly diagnose and medicate their animals. As dog’s population gets older, the frequency of osteoarthritis (OA), which is a chronic degenerative disease, will increase. This illness causes pain, discomfort and, therefore, progressive loss of mobility, affecting thedog’s quality of life and its relationship with the owner.Ordinary treatments to control inflammation cause adverse reactions, which are harmful to the dog's health. The administration of nutraceuticals such as curcumin, endowed with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties already proven by scientific research, is suggested as a safer alternative to be used in long-term treatments.The scientific knowledge of the curcumin’s clinical benefits may represent new treatment options, which is a very strong argument for conducting further research that presents alternative methods to manage pain in dogs afflicted by OA.
