This research chiefly analyzed the ostensible-inferential processes, according to the Theory of Relevance, the actions/conversations of the character Ishmael Chambers coming from the court hearings scenes of Scott Hicks’ movie Snow Falling on Cedars (1999). The data showed the acuity of utilizing three different acting levels – the logic form, explicitness, implicitness, of Sperber and Wilson (1986, 1995) and Carston (1988) upon describing Ishmael Chambers’ behavior throughout the movie, by showing that communication is not only established by codes or inferences. On the other hand, cinematographic resources allowed one to transcend the limitations of a real hearing, especially, the flashbacks permitted to monitor the mental processes of the characters. Based on the analytical instrumental, it was possible to describe the characters’ beliefs in relation to the Japanese community, the jury’s potential behavior at Kazuo Miyamoto’s trial, possible murderer of Carl Heine, and the spectators’ beliefs over the facts. At the onset of the plot, Ishmael and spectator imply the defendant’s conviction. However, the character, sure of the contrary, finds evidences, which would later acquit him, and, at the trial, finds himself constrained between applying his duty as citizen and the distress for breaking up his relationship with Hatsue forcibly, the defendant’s wife. Chapter sixteen, the Forensic evidence, is fundamental for his decision making. Before the factual implication of the conviction, Ishmael decides to help the defendant.
