Undergraduate dental student performance during dental radiology clinical activities

Resumo: | The present study aimed at evaluating students of Dental Radiology, comparing some requirements for performing the periapical radiograph technique carried out on manikins and patients. As a basis for the research, radiographs obtained in practical classes were analyzed and sorted in relation to manikins and patients. The following criteria were also observed for sorting radiographs: diagnostic radiographs, film placement, image distortion, exposure, position of the tube head, and radiographic processing. It was observed that 30% of the results revealed faulty performances. Among the main difficulties found we can point out film placement problems, where only 41% of the cases were inadequate, followed by radiographic processing for 32% of the cases, image distortion for 10% of cases, exposure for 9% of the cases, and finally, position of the tube head for 8% of the cases. The close relation between preclinical learning and its application to clinical activities in the integrated method produced a clear qualification of students. Furthermore, film placement problems were the most prevalent example of failure in both manikin and patient. Finally, processing failures were significant in the results obtained for the patient. |

Finally, processing failures were significant in the results obtained for the patient.O presente estudo visa avaliar os alunos da disciplina de Imaginologia Dento-Maxilo-Facial, comparando alguns quesitos da prática de técnica radiográfica periapical realizada em manequins com dentes naturais e pacientes. Como base da pesquisa, foram analisadas radiografias obtidas nas aulas práticas, divididas em relação ao manequim com dentes naturais e pacientes. Nestas foram observados os seguintes critérios de qualidade: enquadramento do filme na região; distorção na imagem; exposição; direcionamento do feixe de Raios X; e processamento radiográfico. As radiografias foram avaliadas, pelo mesmo operador. Os dados do desempenho dos alunos, seguindo os critérios de qualidade estipulados e obtidos na avaliação foram tabulados, colocados em porcentagem e analisados estatisticamente pelo teste exato de Fisher para comparar os resultados dos exames radiográficos obtidos no manequim com dentes naturais e pacientes, e o teste qui-quadrado para comparar as falhas técnicas detectadas, ambos no nível de significância de 5%. Os achados experimentais permitiram concluir que: a estreita relação entre o aprendizado pré-clínico e sua aplicação nas atividades clínicas no método integrado produz nítida capacitação discente. E mais, o enquadramento do filme foi a falha técnica mais prevalente, no manequim e paciente.
