Resumo: The aim of this study was to identify and to evaluate, by means of a questionnaire, the difficulties faced by students during laboratorial activities in extracted human teeth mounted on a mannequin in the discipline of Endodontics. Thus, the periapical radiographs taken during tooth-length determination procedures were analysed as to the factors quantity of dental intraoral films and their loss, waste of work time and work time. Fifty 3rd year students were selected which were taking the discipline of Endodontics of the Department of Dentistry, University of Taubaté, SP, Brazil, in the first semester of 2005. After their lab activities, students were evaluated by means of an interview during an estimated minimum time of 10 minutes. The professors explained and showed the contents of the questionnaire to the students, and these were asked, initially, to fill out and sign a free and informed consent form. The professor then handed out six to seven cards to each student with the questionnaire, one card for each tooth for which the student had already concluded the tooth-length determination procedure. For each card, the student was asked to express and identify in the previously created questionnaire the presence or absence of any difficulty. It was concluded that the molars presented the highest frequencies in number and percentages of difficulties, followed by the premolars and lastly by the incisors. There was significant statistical difference (p = 0.01) in relation to the factors quantity of dental intraoral films used, waste of work time and work time during the tooth-length determination procedures among the three evaluated dental groups.
