Resumo: Estimates suggest that in the world there are about 39 million fishermen and 156 million persons depending indirectly on fisheries - processing, transportation and marketing of fish. Overall, 90% of fishermen are involved in small-scale fishing - or traditional craftsmanship - and that in developing countries, this proportion is higher. Over the years the fishing activity in the state of Espirito Santo has become a major source of income and food supply to a large number of families, especially for small coastal towns. However, when we analyze the state where the activity is located, there has been, for example, a lack of proper management, poor infrastructure and the use of obsolete technologies. The present study, conducted in the fishing communities of Guriri and Barra Nova, all located in São Mateus, aims productive chain links of the analysis and the application of analysis methodology of Modes and Fault effects (FMEA) in input processes, production, processing and marketing of fish. The results showed that the problems encountered in the production chain are mostly linked to a lack of quality in the processing, as well as a lack of government incentives.
