Resumo: How was it possible the election of Donald Trump in 2016 and why the liberals could not stand up to it? These are the questions that Mark Lilla tries to answer in his book. Observing the construction of a political culture centered in the individualism, the author criticizes how liberals in the United States have crystallized a political strategy based on purely identity politics making themselves uncapable of building a shared political agenda. This “pseudopolitics” narrows the scope of the demands from the liberals which weakens the electoral power of the Democrats as well as promotes a political vacuum. This creates as well an environment that is being filled with individuals who have a discourse well adapted to the present antidemocratic mentality.

Essas são as perguntas que Mark Lilla em seu novo livro se propõe a responder. Observando a construção de uma cultura política cada vez mais centrada no individualismo, o autor critica a maneira como os agentes do campo liberal dos Estados Unidos cristalizaram um modo de fazer política caracterizado em pautas puramente identitárias que tornam incapaz a construção de uma agenda política compartilhada.
