Resumo: The aim of this study is to show the military function on the Brazilian politics from 1945 to 1985.Looking historical facts impartially, showing how we can view the Military forces, mainly the Army,like a political power active in the hardest moments of Republic. The importance of Armed Forceswas showed on two ways, the operation and the function. The operation are most important andstriking works that the Army has done on Brazilian history, they are divided between combat actionand national development. The function is what the military mean in the politics and the legal andlegitimate explanation for this importance. The work has contained searches in books, discourses,newspapers and interview.

Realizou-se um estudo sobre o papel dos militares na política brasileira durante o período da 1945 a1985. Observou-se os fatos históricos objetivamente, a fim de mostrar as Forças Armadas,principalmente o Exército, como um poder político atuante nos momentos mais difíceis da República.A importância das Forças Armadas é apresentada de duas formas: a atuação e o papel dos militares.A atuação diz respeito aos feitos mais importantes e marcantes realizados pelo Exército na históriabrasileira, divididos entre ações de combate e de desenvolvimento nacional. Já o papel se refere àação dos militares na política, quando se buscou compreender a legalidade e a legitimidade dessaação.
