SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: A PROPOSED TAXONOMY BASED ON MANAGEMENT STUDENTS’ ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION

Resumo: In many Higher Education Institutions (hei), environmental initiatives are being consolidated into institutional strategies. However, business and management literature still lacks a clear understanding about the possible effects of such programs for raising sustainability awareness among students in the area of management. In this sense, the present paper aims toanalyze how the environmental sustainability practices developed by the hei's are perceived by management students. For this purpose, the behavior of 755 students from four heis, all of which have had sustainability programs in place for at least five years, was studied. After analyzing the results, a taxonomy contributing an empirical categorization directly relatedthe students’ environmental awareness and understanding of the heis sustainability initiatives was created. In addition to generating three clusters showing distinct behaviors (lack of perception of sustainability initiatives; sustainability initiatives are restricted to marketing actions; creation and dissemination of sustainability practices as a major strategy), this taxonomy also helped to understand how management students perceive the sustainability programs developed by the heis.

No entanto, não se tem, ainda, na literatura administrativa, uma noção clara de quanto essas práticas influenciam os estudantes de administração a serem mais conscientes no que tange à sustentabilidade. Dentrodeste contexto, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar de que forma são percebidas pelos alunos do curso de administração as práticas de sustentabilidade desenvolvidas pelas ies. Para isto, estudou-se o comportamento de 755 alunos de quatro ies que tinham como característica comum a existência de práticas sustentáveis e a sua comprovação em um período mínimo de cinco anos. Ao término da análise, foi criada uma taxonomia, que traz como contribuição uma classificação empírica, que relaciona diretamente a consciência ambiental dos alunos e o conhecimento das práticas sustentáveis da ies.
