The Speaking Cities Through Urban Graphic Artifacts: the Case of Lavapiés, in Madrid

Resumo: This article presents the results of a study carried out in the Lavapiés neighborhood, located in central Madrid, aimed at understanding the way in which the region’s cultural memory is constituted through a set of urban graphic artifacts and/or urban messages. Based on the concept of cultural memory formulated by the semiotician Iúri M. Lotman having the drift (DEBORD, 2003), as a methodological strategy, verbal messages were selected in which sentences indicate “what is being protested”, “who is being protested against”, or “what is being opposed”. This shows that the memory of the neighborhood is activated by the relationship between the “I” and the “Other”, seeking to delineate what Lavapiés is or what it should be.

A partir del concepto de memoria cultural formulado por el semiólogo Iúri M. Lotman y como estrategia metodológica, la deriva (DEBORD, 2003), se seleccionaron mensajes verbales en los que las frases indican “qué se protesta”, “contra quién se protesta” o “a qué se opone”. Esto demuestra que la memoria del barrio se activa por la relación entre el “yo” y el “otro”, que trata de delimitar lo que Lavapiés es o debería ser.Este artigo apresenta o resultado de uma pesquisa realizada no bairro Lavapiés, localizado na região central de Madrid, voltada a apreender o modo pelo qual ocorre a constituição da memória cultural da região por meio de um conjunto de artefatos gráficos urbanos e/ou mensagens urbanas. Tendo por base o conceito de memória cultural formulado pelo semioticista Iúri M. Lotman e como estratégia metodológica a deriva (DEBORD, 2003), foram selecionadas mensagens verbais em cujas frases há a indicação sobre “o que se protesta”, “contra quem se protesta” ou “a que se contrapõem”.
