Queer Vestiges in Alberto Cavalcanti’s Biography and Filmography

Resumo: This is a study of the queer traces in the biography and filmography of Alberto Cavalcanti, a Brazilian filmmaker who built a career between France and England, where he took part in the main avant-garde movements of the first half of the 20th century. In the studies that have existed so far, his homosexuality has been widely reported, but never studied. The aim is therefore to analyze the homoerotic residues in the biography of this modern and cosmopolitan filmmaker, as well as to study the homoerotic content of his short film Coalface (1935). The methodology makes essayistic use of a triangulation between reading biographical texts, examining scientific literature and producing film analysis.

En los estudios existentes hasta la fecha, su homosexualidad ha sido ampliamente divulgada, pero nunca estudiada. El objetivo es, por tanto, analizar los residuos homoeróticos en la biografía de este cineasta moderno y cosmopolita, así como estudiar el contenido homoerótico de su cortometraje Coalface (1935). La metodología recurre a una triangulación ensayística entre la lectura de textos biográficos, el examen de la literatura científica y la elaboración de análisis fílmicos.Trata-se de um estudo inicial sobre os vestígios queer na biografia e na filmografia de Alberto Cavalcanti, um cineasta brasileiro que construiu carreira entre a França e a Inglaterra, onde participou dos principais movimentos de vanguarda da primeira metade do século XX. Nos estudos até então existentes, sua homossexualidade é amplamente informada, porém, nunca estudada. O objetivo é, portanto, analisar os resíduos homoeróticos na biografia desse cineasta moderno e cosmopolita, bem como estudar o teor homoerótico de seu curta-metragem Coalface (1935).
