In the course of the 19th century,emerges and develops the knowledge ofPrehistory as the remotest period ofHistory and as a specific area of expertise.The Atlantic circulation of newsabout ideas, concepts, sites and prehistoricremains, along with the constructionof a western affiliation for ourcountry, as a modern nation, resulted inthe first official prescription of Prehistoryunder the Republic. The compendiumHistoria Antiga, by João Ribeiro,adopted by the Ginasio Nacional (therepublican name given to the ImperialCollegio de Pedro II) in 1892, is a centraldocument for understanding thewriting process of a basic school Prehistoryin that school in the 1890s. In thiscompendium lies the construction of aPrehistory along the lines of the scientificdebate of the time. This paper placesits prescription in that school’s teaching Programs and identifies the guidelines of its Prehistory
