Resumo: The Youth and Adult Education (YAE) offered at a distance can consolidate itself as an alternative of access to schooling. Taking that into consideration, this study analyzes the initial distance education offered in the city of São José in Santa Catarina with the objective of identifying the factors related to the distance education offer that contribute to students’ access, learning, and retention. To this end, a qualitative field study was carried out with 89 students at a distance, through the application of a questionnaire. The results reveal that the interaction with teachers and colleagues and the characteristics of the distance learning process itself are the most positive aspects. The difficulties of studying at a distance are related to some characteristics of the course organization and to the technical conditions of access to the virtual environment. Despite this, the positive evaluation of students in relation to the course stands out. The study concludes that distance YAE can be an alternative to the democratization of education by contributing to access, retention and learning. Keywords: Distance learning. Virtual learning environment. Flexibilization. Technologies.

Technologies. Palavras-chave: Educação a distância.
