High School: orphan of ideas, heir of misunderstandings

Resumo: High School is the meeting point of big contradictions in Brazilian education system because it plays a lot of roles. We can say that it is a level in permanent crises. The major problem of high school is in having to prepare half of its students to work and the other half to higher education. These two things differ a lot from each other; since there's a big distance between values and functional attitudes concerning both. High school inherits all the problems from the primary school and add them new model in the world. There is no alternate route between schools with different faces (European model); and there isn't any possibility of taking different paths in the same school either (American model). There is a wide debate on the solution to our high school system. Some of the big lines can be suggested, principally because they deal with mistakes which corrections are necessary. But, soon, however, it will be necessary to have enough courage to solve the problem concerning the unique system, which in theory, offers the same school to everybody, but in fact, it doesn't offer anything, even a good education. Besides that, it still discriminates the poor people. Only Brazil has this system. Only Brazil pays the price for this impossible utopia.

Se puede decir que es un nivel en crisis permanente. El dilema mas grave del curso medio esta entre preparar la mitad de los alumnos para el trabajo y la otra mitad para el superior. Son cosas dispares, con grandes distancias entre valores y actitudes funcionales en cada una de las opciones. La enseñanza de grado medio hereda todos los problemas de cualidad de la enseñanza primaria y soma a ellos un modelo inedito en el mundo: no hay caminos alternativos ni entre escuelas con perfiles diferentes (modelo europeo) ni la posibilidad de trillar trayectorias divergentes dentro de la misma escuela (modelo americano). Hay amplio debate sobre las múltiplas salidas para la nuestra enseñanza de grado medio. Algunas grandes lineas pueden ser sugeridas, justamente por lidiaren con errores flagrantes, cuya correccion se hace necesaria. Pero, mas temprano o mas tarde, sera preciso tener el coraje para resolver el problema de un sistema único que, en la teoria, ofrece la misma escuela para todos y, en la practica, no ofrece nada para nadie, ni una enseñanza que preste. Ademas, aún, discrimina los mas pobres. Solo Brasil presenta ese sistema. Solo Brasil paga el precio de esa utopia imposible.Ensino Medio, ponto de encontro das muitas contradicoes do ensino brasileiro, tem papeis demais. Pode-se dizer que e um nivel em crise permanente. O dilema mais grave do medio esta entre preparar a metade dos alunos para o trabalho e a outra metade para o superior. Sao coisas dispares, com maiores distâncias entre valores e atitudes funcionais em cada uma das opcoes. O ensino medio herda todas os problemas de qualidade do fundamental e soma a eles um modelo inedito no mundo: nao ha caminhos alternativos nem entre escolas com perfis diferentes (modelo europeu) nem a possibilidade de trilhar trajetorias divergentes dentro da mesma escola (modelo americano). Ha amplo debate sobre as múltiplas saidas para o nosso ensino medio. Algumas grandes linhas podem ser sugeridas, justamente por lidarem com erros flagrantes, cuja correcao se faz necessaria. Mas, mais cedo ou mais tarde, porem, sera preciso ter a coragem para resolver o impasse de um sistema único que, na teoria, oferece a mesma escola para todos e, na pratica, nao oferece nada para ninguem, nem um ensino que preste. Ademais, ainda, discrimina os mais pobres. So o Brasil apresenta esse sistema.
