University students faced with the gender matter: propedeutic study for the educational intervention

Resumo: The article presents the results of a qualitative research which has been carried out to detect – as a previous step towards the educational intervention – how the high abilities university students perceive the gender stereotypes in three different settings of their daily lifes: the family environment, the academic field in the University, and the social context in which the communal time passes. The study data have been obtained by means of discussion groups, a metodologic procedure of proved effectiveness in the social reserch of attitudes. The results show that the gender equality is gradually reinforced in the daily contexts, which the subjects of the research frequent; it is not a matter which provokes controversy. Nevertheless, these university students also admit that they alredy notice the existence of apparently impregnable shelter of negative discrimination towards the woman, both in the culturally less provided and the wealthier levels of the society. All in all, we conclude that in spite of the undeniable advances from last decades, there remains alredy the necessity of carrying out learning actions in favor of the real equality between women and men, not only for the university population, but also to all the citizens, no matter which the scene or the circumstances of their lifes should be.

Los datos del estudio se han obtenido mediante grupos de discusion, un procedimiento metodologico de probada eficácia en la investigación social de las actitudes. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que en los contextos cotidianos que frecuentan los sujetos de la investigación la igualdad de genero se afianza paso a paso; no es una cuestion que suscite controversia. Sin embargo, estos universitarios tambien reconocen que aún perciben en la sociedad la existencia de reductos de discriminación negativa hacia la mujer, aparentemente inexpugnables, tanto entre las clases culturalmente poco dotadas como en los niveles mas acomodados de la sociedad. De todo ello concluimos que, a pesar de los innegables avances de las últimas decadas, persiste la necesidad de llevar a cabo acciones formativas en pro de la igualdad real de mujeres y varones, dirigidas no solo a la poblacion universitaria sino a toda la ciudadania cualquiera que sea el escenario o circunstancias de su periplo vital.O artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa qualitativa que foi realizada com a finalidade de detectar - como uma etapa previa à intervencao educativa – como os estudantes universitarios de alto rendimento percebem os estereotipos de genero em tres diferentes cenarios da sua vida cotidiana: o ambiente familiar, o ambiente academico e o contexto social no qual desenvolve seu tempo comunitario. Os dados do estudo foram obtidos atraves de grupos de discussao, um procedimento metodologico de eficácia comprovada na pesquisa social das atitudes. Os resultados manifestam que nos contextos cotidianos que freqüentam os sujeitos da pesquisa a igualdade de genero acontece passo a passo, nao e uma questao que levante controversias.
