Resumo: Current paper analyzes the sources of occupational stress and the coping strategies in primary school teachers from Mozambique. A half-structured interview was handed out to 20 primary school teachers in Nampula, Mozambique. Analysis of the categorical contents of the interviews indicates that the teachers perceived their work as stressful. Occupation stress factors may be grouped into three categories: work factors (poor work conditions, low salary, lack of professional development, educational policies and excessive workload); student factors (great number of students per class, students´ behavior and low learning rates) and extra-school factors (lack of participation of parents). Coping strategies used by teachers were focused on emotion. There is a need to plan and implement prevention and intervention programs for coping with stress to the target public.
