Resumo: The article aims at offering a discussion on the relations between education and the construction of social autonomy in two African countries, which were conquered and colonised by Portugal from the Modern Age to the year of 1975: Angola and Mozambique. For this discussion, a dialogue among the theoretical approaches of Cornelius Castoriadis, Michel de Certeau and Paulo Freire has been established in order to understand the Angolan and the Mozambican historical realities in the forthcoming turn of the 21st. In this sense, the authors highlight the importance of political choices for achieving the self-determination of peoples and the overcoming of the colonial heritage.Keywords: Autonomy – Education – Angola – Mozambique.
