Resumo: The labial frenum is a portion of the lining mucosa attached to the gum and / or alveolar mucosa and is present in all human beings. When it is diagnosed as anomalous, it causes harm to the patient, such as diastemas, poor installation and fitting of prostheses, among other adversities, indicating its excision, which must be performed with excellence, so that there are no recurrences. In this case, it is possible to opt for a surgical technique of removal with a scalpel or by means of a high-powered laser. Objective: The present study was carried out with the aim of describing two treatment options for removing the upper lip brake by conventional surgical techniques and with a high-power diode laser. In addition, we will report the surgical treatment of two patients with upper lip brakes with abnormal insertions using both techniques. Materials and methods: Databases of scientific articles indexed in PubMed, MEDLINE, Scielo and LILACS were consulted, in English and Portuguese that described the two surgical techniques. After signing the TCLE, two patients with anomalous insertion of the upper lip brakes underwent surgery using the two different techniques. Result: It was concluded that, when correctly indicated, surgery using both techniques has advantages and disadvantages, with the dental surgeon being responsible for evaluating and choosing the most consistent with the reality of the case.
