Compaixão e proteção: a argumentação sensibilizadora do vídeo Despedida à Nação do presidente Lula

Living in peoples’ heart and keep living until the last days. That’s how President Lula finished his last official speech for national broadcast at the end of his second administration. Directed to his main audience at that moment – the beneficiaries of the “lulism” project – the quoted phrase shows the leader’s concern about exposing his proximity with the people. According to that, a feeling of identity and intimacy between the head of the state and the brazilian population, who watches the statement, is promoted. This action is characterized by the use of argumentative techniques employed by political leaders to induce and increase the adhesion to their thesis. Therefore, the aim of this work is to infer the rhetorical strategies appeared in Lulas’ valediction on November 23, 2010. To perform the analysis, it was taken, as an object of study, the video called Despedida à Nação (Farewell to Nation), broadcast on TV, nationally, with this speech content. The analyzed orator is part of the brazilian democratic political History for the last thirty years and he was elected as the Republic President twice. During this period, he got attention because of his charismatic speech, which influenced his speech, full of rhetorical elements to convince the population about the necessity to support the permanence his political project. Therefore, the theoretical construction of this study will associate Rhetorical conceptions stated by Aristotle (2003), Meyer (2007), Perelman & Olbrecths-Tyteca (1996) and Reboul (2004). Even if the analyzed video reveals an accountability speech and the verification of administrative efficiency, subjects as reliability, compassion, dreams, love, hope, friendship, protection and even religiousness are present. Those subjects are explored in order to persuade people, through a political speech that is almost didactic and has a strong emotional appeal. According to that, we will also verify how argumentative strategies collaborate to pathos incitation on the audience and how it makes Lula a charismatic and populist speaker.
