This research project intended to understand the way document management takes place in small companies, also checking if outsourcing is feasible for them. It was assumed that small companies manage their documents in an unprofessional way, which increases their costs and generates unnecessary risks, which may impair their sustainability. The methodology that was used involved lierature review, a questionnaire that was answered by owners, managers or those in charge of document management in small companies, interviews with such people, the observation of the companies’ premises and interviews with executives of storage and document management specialized companies. The sample originally included 30 small companies, but two of those didn’t fit the criteria established to define them as small companies and had to be disregarded. The relevance of this research relates to its ineditism, as the author is not aware of any other study on the way small companies manage their documents. The study revealed that the level of instruction of those in charge of document management is high. In fact, such task is usually performed by the owners themselves, which shows some concern about the issue. However, management indeed usually happens in a very amateur way, as hypothetized, resulting in small companies facing unnecessary risks. It was also detected that the majority of the surveyed companies has no documental timing control, in order to eliminate documents that are not useful anymore. That means that the archives never stopo growing, which, on its turn, increases management costs and makes it more difficult to locate documents that are still relevant. In brief, the research project has shown that most of the companies that took part in the sample are not managing their documents in a suitable way. The consequences of their slack operational performance may have deep strategic consequences, affecting the sustainability of the whole business.
