Resumo: Este artigo é resultado de uma pesquisa de campo que teve por objetivo conhecer o potencial da educação ofertada em um presídio feminino da cidade do Recife, no sentido entender se contribui ou não com a construção da inteligência emocional de mulheres privadas de liberdade. Em função da própria natureza do fenômeno estudado e da escolha teórica, o trabalho se caracteriza como qualitativo, uma vez que busca as atribuições de sentidos e ressignificações do vivido. Utilizamos a análise de documentos, observação e entrevistas para tecer uma compreensão mais profunda das narrativas das mulheres encarceradas. A analise de conteúdo foi a técnica utilizada para a interpretação inferencial. O critério para a escolha dos sujeitos da pesquisa foi a inserção, no contexto escolar, dos sujeitos regularmente matriculados e frequentando as aulas. O contato com as mulheres encarceradas teve a duração de seis meses e o acompanhamento teve a participação de seis mulheres encarceradas. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que o encarceramento em si não é um facilitador do desejo de estudar e de aprender; entretanto, as mulheres que demonstraram interesse em participar das atividades escolares melhoraram o aprendizado e encontraram no estudo uma forma de repensar  os atos praticados antes da prisão e afirmaram tentar viver uma reeducação interna, buscando seu autoconhecimento para lidar melhor com suas emoções. Concluímos que deveria haver um trabalho dentro dos presídios, direcionado ao desenvolvimento da inteligência emocional, o que facilitaria o desenvolvimento de processos internos voltados para o autoconhecimento.Palavras-chave: Inteligência emocional. Mulheres presidiárias.Abstract: The article is the result of a field research project that investigated the potential of the education offered in a female prison in the city of Recife in order to understand whether it contributes to the construction of female inmates’ emotional intelligence. Due to the very nature of the phenomenon studied and the theoretical choice, the research is qualitative, since it focuses on the meanings and significations attributed by the subjects. We analyzed documents, observation and interviews to arrive at a deeper understanding of the incarcerated women's narratives. Content analysis was the technique used for inferential interpretation. The research subjects were chosen based on their insertion in the educational context, since they were duly enrolled in and attending the classes. The contact with the inmates lasted six months and the follow-up was attended by six incarcerated women. The results obtained demonstrate incarceration itself; it is not a place that favors the desire to study and learn. However, women who showed an interest in participating in school activities improved their learning, found in the study a way of rethinking the acts practiced before prison, and claimed that they were trying to experience internal reeducation by seeking their self-knowledge to cope with their emotions. We concluded that there should be work directed to the development of emotional intelligence inside the prisons.Keywords: Emotional Inteligence. Education. Female Inmates.
