Rural schools: a dimensional analysis of the social representations of teachers

This article is an excerpt from a broader research project and aims to explore the dimensions (information, attitude and representational field) in the social representations of rural schools built by teachers who work in these institutions. We developed a qualitative field research study    with the collaboration of 35 teachers from a municipality in the countryside of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Through semi-structured interviews with these teachers, we identified elements related to the three dimensions of social representations: information, image, and attitude. The results indicate that these teachers share the social representation of the rural schools as institutions, which favors rural exodus by providing new peasant generations with knowledge access and internalization. In the interviewees' representations, the rural flight is stimulated by supposed advantages that city life can offer. A dimensional analysis of these representations shows an alignment with the assumptions that underlie this dichotomy
