Resumo: | A field study was carried out in 1988, in Pacajus, Ceará, Brazil, with the objective of studying the effects of planting arrangement and row orientation on the production of two cassava (Manihot esculenta) cultivars. The cultivar Jaburu showed higher ability for fresh weight accumulation in roots and shoots between 90 and 190 days after planting. Cv. Saracura had higher plants, with higher number of apices, branches, leaves and tuberous roots, thicker canopy and smaller roots. Planting arrangement had no significant effect on the following parameters: root length and diameter; number of leaves; leaf area index; plant height; canopy width; number of apices; shoot fresh weight and harvest index. The number of roots and the root yield were significantly affected by planting arrangement, with single row outyielding double row arrangement. Planting arrangement had no effects on light attenuation by plants. |

Planting arrangement had no effects on light attenuation by plants.Ensaio foi realizado em 1988 em Pacajus, Ceará, objetivando estudar o efeito do ar-ranjo e da orientação de plantio no crescimento e produção de duas cultivares de mandioca (Manihot esculenta). A cv. Jaburu apresentou maior acúmulo de peso fresco nas raízes e parte aérea, entre 90 e 190 dias. A cv. Saracura produziu plantas mais altas com maior número de ápices, mais ramificadas, e maior altura da saia da copa, tendo ainda maior número de folhas. Apresentou maior número de raízes tuberosas/planta, porém com menor tamanho. O arranjo de plantas em fileiras simples ou duplas não determinou efeitos significativos nos seguintes parâmetros: diâmetro e comprimento das raízes, número de folhas, IAF, altura da planta, envergadura da copa, altura da saia da planta, número de ápices, produção de ramas e índice de colheita. O número de raízes/planta e a produção de raízes foram afetados pelo arranjo de plantio, com a fileira simples apresentando ligeira superioridade.
