Bioclimatic characteristics of wheats in southern Brazil

Resumo: Wheat trials were conducted at Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, from 1960 to 1967 to evaluate the bioclimatic characteristics of several commercial varieties and lines bred for use in southern Brazil. Using the heliotermic index of Geslin for interpretation, the authors conclude that the wheat varieties being grown in the region fall into four bioclimatic types: super-early, early, intermediate and late. Each type has different requirements in regard to temperature and day-length. To meet climatic adversities in the main wheat region, super-early and intermediate types are considered to have the most promise.

To meet climatic adversities in the main wheat region, super-early and intermediate types are considered to have the most promise.Em 1967 foram realizados ensaios em Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, com a finalidade de caracterizar bioclimàticamente os trigos semeados no sul do Brasil. Compararam-se os comportamentos de semeaduras quinzenais de 50 variedades e linhagens, entre abril e setembro, mediante o Índice Heliotérmico de Geslin. Determinaram-se quatro diferentes grupos bioclimáticos de trigo, que foram designados como superprecoces, precoces, intermediários e tardios. Os trigos superprecoces são indiferentes ao comprimento do dia, não necessitam frio e portanto não reagem à vernalização, e, além disso, requerem temperaturas relativamente altas no subperíodo encanamento-espigamento. Os trigos precoces reagem à vernalização, possuindo, portanto, certa exigência em frio, que embora pequena, devem satisfazer para desenvolver-se normalmente; são indiferentes ao comprimento do dia e aceleram o seu ciclo vegetativo com as temperaturas crescentes. Os trigos intermediários não necessitam frio, mas exigem um determinado umbral fotoperiódico para espigar, requerendo temperaturas relativamente altas no subperíodo encanamento-espigamento e são de ciclo médio. Os trigos tardios não exigem frio, mas necessitam de dias longos para espigar, reagindo, também, às temperaturas crescentes. Comparando as características bioclimáticas dos diversos grupos com as disponibilidades climáticas do Rio Grande do Sul concluiu-se que a época de semeadura mais indicada para os trigos superprecoces, precoces, intermediários e tardios são respectivamente agosto, maio-junho-julho, fim de julho início de agosto e maio-junho-julho. Conforme a região, a ocasião ótima para, o plantio será o inicio, meio ou fim do período, indicado. Os trigos superprecoces e intermediários são considerados como os mais indicados para as condições climáticas do Rio Grande do Sul, uma vez que não necessitam frio e espigam em uma época do ano em que o balanço hídrico é menos favorável para as duas principais doenças da região: septoriose e fusariose.
